Hey everyone, I'd just like to say that I do know Marvin Lakhan personally, and that this unfortunate incident was not purely his fault. Everyone who knows Marvin knows that he is a kid to heart and that he had no real intention of hurting anyone. I agree that he did deserve what he got, but we should not blame him entirely. Marvin has many psychological problems, and we can obviously see by his actions that it wasnt his fault.

What a Shame. I saw this fool on Tv tonite. I was shocked by not suprised. I knew him from Broward Community College. The biggest Liar and always talked crap. He worked with his father for a alarm and fire testing company. He had it all and blew it right off by doing crap like this. He was always like this....Had tonnes of intrest in "fine chicks" and he would call it and i thought it was all for laughs. I never knew that he had a mind like this. This is really a disgrace to Marvin and his family. This just goes to show that the world over needs GOD. First off, I think the suggestion that Marvin shamed all Trinidadians is pretty stupid. There are black people, while people, puerto ricans, etc. who are constantly being arrested on tv shows like cops doing embarrassing shit, and they're not considered to be an embarrassment to their entire race. Every race, color, and creed has its retards. People are primal beings, and they are who they are, regardless of what racial group they may belong to.

Secondly, this dateline show, although both informative and entertaining, is highly hypocritical. I'd say at least 80% of the people watching the show would probably be more than interested in having sex with a young virgin if they were presented the opportunity to do so without being caught or exposed. The only thing that I think separates many "normal" folks from people like Marvin is that they probably wouldn't be stupid enough to let their desires dictate their actions and actually go meet some unknown underaged girl at some strange house. That is just plain stupid, and it's like holding out your wrists and saying "arrest me." Fact of the matter is that there are perverts all over this world who lead normal lives, and many of them are able to keep their perverted side under wraps. That's part of being human. There's nothing abnormal or inhuman about being perverted in some way, so long as you don't let it control your actions. There are literally thousands of men who watch these dateline programs who have chatted with young girls online or in person, or who either fantasize about or would jump at the chance at having have sex with young girls if allowed an opporrunity to do so without being caught. The problem here is people sitting by, condescendingly, thinking that it's so abhorrent to actually see someone who would be willing to have sex with minors. I think there's a bigger problem here of a society that sexualizes children every day in the way it depicts them on tv and in movies, but which is willing to castrate any individual who thinks of a minor in a sexual way. Sexuality and youth have been synonymous for hundreds of years, throughout Greek and Roman times, throughout early history, throughout Victorian times, throughout current times. Children have often been depicted sexually, and have been considered to be sexually intriguing beings. Nothing shocking about that. I think society needs to wake the fuck up and take a little more responsibility for how it treats this issue, and stop being so hypocritical. The more we can face this reality as a society, the less puzzling it will be to understand how people like Marvin Lakhan exist and can do what they did. There was nothing shocking to me about Marvin's actions, even though they may have been utterly stupid. We live in a society that is willing to treat children as innocent, unknowing beings when it comes to matters of sexuality in certain instances, and as conscious adults who are capable of premeditation and forethought in crimes of murder or other instances. We're a very hypocritical, self-serving society when it comes to how we depict, consider, and exploit children, and we often design or laws to meet those self-serving ends. It's easy to point the finger at anyone who thinks about a child sexually and say "he's the freak," or "these guys are members of underground cults of pedophiles who sodomize kids," but take a closer look at who these perverts are and the way kids are being depicted in different forms of media on a daily basis, and you'll see that this problem is not as simple as everyone makes it out to be.

Another problem is with parents who entrust the majority of their childrens' care to babysitters or other adults, and who don't pay attention to what their kids are doing. In this day and age, kids are exposed to so much information throughout each day of their lives. they are more informed about matters of sexuality than I was when I was that age, and it wasn't so long ago that I was 10 or 11. I think that blaming online mesageboards, chat rooms, and forums like myspace is just stupid. Take more responsibility as parents if you're so worried about your kids falling into stupid situations. Stop buying them thongs at the age of 9 or 10. Encourage them to spend more time doing productive things than spending time online. Engage more with your children. Although this isn't a solution to the problem (because we all know kids are just curious, and will do shit just to do find out what it's about), it can definitely be a healthy start towards addressing the problem in a productive manner. If you take less of an active role as a parent, then be cognizant of the risks your placing your child in.
